Bloc4BCN’s Kitchen opens its doors: aspace for promoting food-based projectswith an impact

Bloc4BCN is launching a new professional food processing space for promoting the growth of projects with added value and a social and environmental impact. It’s the Bloc4BCN Kitchen: over 100 m² equipped to test, promote, innovate or improve food-based ideas that are accessible, high-quality, and responsible, with ties to local communities and that align with the values of the Social and Solidarity Economy.

Our Kitchen was created to address a lack of spaces with these characteristics in Barcelona, especially for projects that are just starting out or that want to take a step forward in food preparation and processing. It includes areas for preparation and dry storage, a display and tasting area, dressing rooms, all manner of utensils, and specialized machinery such as an autoclave, a packaging machine, and a dehydrator that help to optimize production processes.

Our Kitchen fulfils all the requirements to process the necessary health registrations and to guarantee food safety and future commercialization. From the very beginning, it provides a space for preparing plant-based products, prepared meals, food supplements, sauces, condiments, jams, sweet preserves, pastries and plant-based smoothies or juices. Users can also prepare organic foods and obtain the certification to prove it (CCPAE). Each producer will manage their own registration, but with the support of a shared protocol and technical documents. 

One of the distinctive features of our Kitchen is its connection with the Bloc4BCN ecosystem: one of the biggest cooperative centres in Europe, promoted by the Confederation of Cooperatives of Catalonia, the Federation of Worker Cooperatives of Catalonia, and Coòpolis, which together make up the Bloc4 Association. Being a part of this space allows access to guidance, training, advisory services and financial support and, if necessary, help creating your new cooperative. 

Regarding the guidance provided by the Kitchen, three itineraries have been defined according to how far along a project is:

  • A Test Space for ideas that are in the initial phase and that need to test their viability without commercialization.
  • A Nursery Space for projects that are beginning to come together and expand their market.
  • A Consolidation Space for projects that want to continue to evolve through innovation and intercooperation. 

Overall, our Kitchen is a flexible, well-equipped space with all the necessary guarantees. It is strategically located and enjoys the support of an active cooperative ecosystem. It’s a place to imagine and experiment, but also to grow confidently towards future plans.
